Q. I put my finger down inside and couldn't feel oil. Perhaps that's fine...

A. You cannot reach the oil with your finger in a Virago engine. The oil level is very much lower than the fill hole in the top of the case. Also, there are engine components in the way, so a stick won't work either. If it would, Yamaha would have added a "dipstick" to the oil fill cap and saved the expense of manufacturing the case side covers without a "window" in them. The only way to check is to have the bike on it's center stand (or held level by a helper if the stand has been removed) and look at the actual oil level through the sight glass.
